Getting your Tax File Number

Applying for a Tax File Number (TFN) should be one of the first things you do when you arrive in Australia. You must register for a TFN as you will pay more tax than necessary without one. This can be done at any main tax office or you can call the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and have an application form sent to you. Your TFN will take approximately four weeks to process. In the meantime you will be issued with a registration notice. Upon receipt of your TFN you should notify your employer or the recruitment agency who is paying you immediately.
