Contract work
The largest contract market tends to be in IT, however, all professions have demand for good professional contractors. Contracts are generally for specialist roles or project based work (such as SOX or a SAP implementation).
What are the benefits of contract work?
- You can get work quickly
- Contracts offer great flexibility
- You can gain a variety of work experience through different contracts
- You can 'try out' a job, industry or employer before deciding whether they are right for you
- You may get paid more due to having less job security
- In Australia contractors are able to structure their tax in such a way as to keep more of what they earn (versus PAYE)
Other points on contracting
- Contracts are generally three to six months, but often roll on
- Contractors are not paid for any hours that they do not work (i.e. sick days or holidays)
- If a notice period on a contract is one day, then the contractor can give this notice, or the company that they are contracting to can give them this notice. Although generally ample notice is given on each side.
- Contractors often do not have the same access to facilities that permanent employees have. In some organisations contractors are not invited to the Christmas party and are not able to use the work gym.
- Contractors usually work the same hours as permanent employees. If overtime is paid often contractors will volunteer to work longer hours so they can make more money.
The recruitment agency pay wages to contract workers
If you are contracting through an agency you generally receive your pay from that agency. The only time you would receive your pay from the employer is if you were working on a fixed-term contract.
