Working in IT

Demand is outstripping supply in the Australian IT market for both contract and permanent positions.

Skills in particular demand include:

  • Analysts
  • Developers
  • ERP and Security professionals
  • Project managers
  • Software Development professionals with J2SE

Contracts tend to be short (3-6 months) as smaller projects are being implemented as temporary fixes, resulting in demand for specialists. The permanent job market is also strong, with organisations fighting to retain top level talent.

What people earn and how it stacks up

IT professionals continue to be extremely well paid and well received in Australia. Demand is highest in Sydney leading to slightly higher salary packages.

Being there is everything!

Typically it is difficult to secure employment prior to your arrival in Australia. Once you have arrived you will find your job search to be a lot easier. Depending on how flexible you are it can take from one to four weeks to secure a role.

The best time to go

The Australian market remains consistent between March and November. The summer months between December and February tend to be considerably slower as hiring managers are away on leave.

If you are returning home from the UK, keep in mind that it is popular to come home before Christmas. Make sure you arrive in Australia before December if you are looking to get a job quickly.
