Wellington (North Island) – Also the Capital of New Zealand Nearly all Wellington residents are within three kilometres of the coastline, and the city has 109 parks and playgrounds. As a region Wellington has a diverse range of landscapes including 50,000 hectares of regional parks and forests. Climate: Warmest month: February (17°C average) Wellington has more sunshine hours than London and less rainfall than Auckland. Population: Wellington city: 179,466 Wellington city's population accounts for 4.45% of the New Zealand population and is expected to see steady growth over the next decade. Hamilton (North Island) - in the Waikato Region Vibrant, diverse and thriving - Hamilton combines all the vigour and energy of a bustling city with a relaxed, easy lifestyle. Bay of Plenty Region (North Island) The Bay of Plenty lies east of the Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges and south of the Coromandel Peninsula. Christchurch (South Island) Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. It is also, arguably, the most attractive city in New Zealand, with extensive inner city public and private gardens and parks, the shallow Avon river meandering though the city centre and a pedestrian oriented downtown centred on Cathedral Square. Christchurch contains one of the two main international airports for the country, and is connected via a tunnel to a seaport at Lyttelton on Bank's Peninsula. Christchurch was a planned settlement founded by the English upper class, and this history is still apparent, both in the city's style and architecture and in features like punts on the Avon and the very English Christ's College school. Climate: Canterbury has warm summers and cool to cold winters. Maximum temperatures in summer are typically in the 27-33°C range. The highest temperature ever recorded in Christchurch was 42°C.
