Health care and health insurance in New Zealand

The health service is well regarded

There are good health and disability services in New Zealand, including doctors, pharmacies and hospitals. As someone living in New Zealand as a citizen, resident, Australian resident or New Zealand work permit holder, you will be eligible to use these services when you need to.

Government funding of health services means that eligible people may receive free inpatient and outpatient public hospital services and subsidies on prescription items.

Under ACC nearly everyone who is injured in an accident in New Zealand, including overseas visitors, are covered or partially covered for treatment in New Zealand, regardless of fault. To veiw the ACC's website, click here.

Health insurance is a good option

You may wish to take out health insurance as firstly, ACC does not cover everything. For example, it only covers treatment for personal injury in New Zealand, and usually you must pay part of the fee yourself. ACC also cannot reimburse you for other expenses such as loss of income. Secondly, if you are referred to a specialist by a doctor and have medical insurance you may be able to make an appointment with a specialist sooner than if you go through the public system.
