Schooling in New ZealandSchooling is compulsory for children aged between six and sixteen, however most students begin school aged five. Most students attend state-funded schools, with every student having the right to enrol at the state school nearest to their home. Many schools that are at risk of overcrowding have a ‘home zone’ that is geographically defined, with those living outside the zone only eligible to be enrolled under special circumstances. Private or independent schools are almost entirely dependent on income derived from student fees, with each school determining their own fee scale. They are governed by their own independent boards but must also meet government standards in order to be registered. Boarding school, correspondence school and home base schooling are other options currently available. For further information on schooling in New Zealand, view the Ministry of Education website.
