The cost of living in the UK

London is a great place to live and can be as expensive or cheap as you want to make it.  You can doss at a mates indefinitely, living off baked beans from Tesco's and visiting all the free galleries, or live life at the Ritz.

Generally we find that you need at least £2,000 for when you arrive.  This will go on covering the costs of finding a place to live and not having a job for a while.

The largest expense is usually accommodation.  If you are getting a vacant flat expect to pay at least one months rent in advance and up to six weeks bond.  Outside of this, London's massive population often means that most other things are quite cheap - like groceries and going to the pub.  Although if you are mortified at paying £20 plus a week minimum for travel, don't worry, you will soon get used to it.
