Health care in the UK

Everyone in the UK is eligible for free emergency treatment at Accident and Emergency departments of the National Health Service (NHS).  You do however need to register before you can see a General Practitioner (GP).  To do this, you can either phone the London Strategic Health Authority (SHA) on +44 (0)20 7016 8872 and quote your postal code, or visit http://www.nhs.uk.

If your condition is non-urgent, you can expect to see a doctor within two working days or a health professional such as a nurse within one working day.  If you don't need an appointment within two working days, you can also book in advance if this is more convenient for you.

Alternatively, private health cover can be arranged.  Companies such as BUPA offer a range of options covering all levels of treatment, while more specialised organisations such as 'Medicentre' offer walk-in doctors consultations and minor treatments specifically for the London area.  Some UK employers include health insurance in their employee benefits package.
