Visit Visa

Citizens of the UK, New Zealand, Australia and most European countries are granted a free-of-charge Visit Visa on arrival in the UAE.  This visa enables you to stay for 60 days.  The visa is renewable for a total stay of 90 days for a fee of Dhs500.

Work permit

Before you quit your job, pack your bags, and book your flights, you need to get a work permit to work in the UAE.  This permit, known as an employment visa/permit, enables you to enter once and stay for 30 days during which time your employer (and sponsor) will complete the formalities for getting you a residency visa.  The residency visa is valid for up to three years and can be extended.

While these permits will cover your husband, wife or children, it will not cover your de facto partner.  In fact under law in Dubai unmarried couples are prohibited from living with each other.

As your employer is your official sponsor (and potentially has paid the rent on your apartment) you are often committed to staying with that employer in Dubai.
